UKCAT Overview

The UKCAT is a 1 hour 30 minute standardized test which consists of the following sections:

Verbal Reasoning

The Verbal Reasoning section evaluates your ability to think logically about written information and to arrive at a reasoned conclusion. The test consists of 11 passages, each with four statements. You have to read the passage and decide whether the statements follow logically from the information in the passage.

Quantitative Reasoning

The Quantitative Reasoning section evaluates your ability to solve numerical problems. The test consists of problems which require you to extract relevant information from tables and other numerical presentations in order to solve the problems.

Abstract Reasoning

The Abstract Reasoning section evaluates your ability to infer relationships from information by convergent and divergent thinking and identify patterns amongst abstract shapes. The test aims to measure both an ability to change track, critically evaluate and generate hypotheses which can be relevant in the development of new ideas and systems.

Decision Analysis

The Decision Analysis section evaluates your ability to deal with various forms of information, to infer relationships, to make informed judgements, and to decide on an appropriate response, in situations of complexity and ambiguity. During the test, you will be presented with a scenario and a significant amount of information together with complex and ambiguous items. The judgements required cannot be based on logical deduction alone and thus simulates decision making in the real world.
